In the era before the advent of the internet and way before social media, instant messaging and chat consumed a significant part of our daily lives, the mail carriers (postmen) played the ubiquitous role of getting our message across to the desired people across the country.
The khaki uniform (identifiable from a distance) and the bell ringing on their rickety bicycle made us wait in anticipation—a much-awaited message, a money order (the Gpay of those days), a government document, or some urgent communication through a telegram (expensive in those days).
They are a depleting force today and hardly noticed. They deserve to be honoured for the support they lent us for decades and continue to do so silently even today (they continue to deliver passports and driver's licenses).
Shruti Sandhaan Foundation honoured eighteen of them to celebrate their contribution to society at the Swantah Sukhaay program, held on 27 October 2024.
